L'edificio fu costruito nel 1840, su autorizzazione di Carlo Lodovico di Borbone, Duca di Lucca, per iniziativa dei coniugi Henry ed Elizabeth Stisted, una coppia d'inglesi che si erano stabiliti ai Bagni di Lucca e di essa si erano invaghiti.

Bagni di Lucca era allora luogo di villeggiatura e di dimora di una numerosa comunità inglese che sentiva l'esigenza di avere un luogo di culto protestante.

La chiesa anglicana, di stile neogotico, ha forma di un palazzo perché Carlo Lodovico non volle che essa avesse aspetto di vera e propria chiesa per non urtare la Curia Arcivescovile.

Il progetto e la costruzione furono affidati all'architetto G. Pardini. Dal 1976 è di proprietà del Comune che l' ha destinata a Sede della Biblioteca Comunale "Adolfo Betti". Qui è custodito anche un importante fondo librario donato al Comune dall'inglese Jean Greenlees che aveva scelto Bagni di Lucca a sua stabile dimora.

I coniugi Stisted nel 1842 fecero aprire anche il Cimitero Anglicano che si trova sull'altra sponda del torrente Lima lungo la Statale del Brennero.

ANGLICAN CHURCH

The building was built in 1840, authorised by Carlo Lodovico di Borbone, Duke of Lucca, on the initiative of Henry and Elizabeth Stisted, an English couple who had settled in Bagni di Lucca and had fallen in love with the place so much that they wanted many other fellow-countrymen to come there and a place for the Anglican cult.

The neo-Gothic Anglican church has the shape of a palace as Carlo Lodovico didn't want it to look like a real church not to clash with the Roman Church. It was designed and built by the architect G. Pardini. Since 1976 it belongs to the Comune and is used as the seat of the "Adolfo Betti" Public Library. An important collection of books is preserved also in the library donated to the City Council by the English Professor Jean Greenlees, who chose Bagni di Lucca as his residence.

In 1842 the Stisteds also opened the Cimitero Anglicano, which is located on the other bank of the river along the Statale del Brennero
